Glowy Wedding Skin: How To

30 Jun

Obviously on my wedding day I want my skin to be clear, dewy perfection. More so than usual. But in order to achieve this, I decided to do… nothing. That’s right. I have continued using the same products I have used since I was a teenager, since these have always worked amazingly for me.

Quick side note, before I dive into a list of my favourite products: I also take care of my skin outside of facials and daily care routine. This means a good, healthy, balanced diet. I eat little junk, and I never starve myself. I drink as much water as I can [it's a struggle for me to get my daily 2 litres, but I try]. I drink wine a few times a week but I don’t go on huge drinking binges. I also don’t smoke. And I try stay happy and content in life. All of these things, I believe, count as much [if not more] as the products you use.

I’ve pretty much always used Nimue. Now and then I’ll use something else for a while because I get a product in a goodie bag, or someone recommends it, but I pretty much always return what I have always deemed the best skin product in South Africa. Here’s what I use:

Morning:

I’ve recently changed my routine from washing my face twice a day to only washing it at night, and in the mornings I rinse it, and then apply toner with some gauze. I apply this very gently around my eye area, and I also apply it to my neck and chest.

This is followed by eye cream [I use eye cream EVERY day, twice a day. Follow suit, ladies. You'll be grateful when you're 30/40/50] and then SPF. I wear SPF every day. Nimue has a great SPF 20 which doesn’t make my face feel- or look oily at all.

Night:

After removing my make-up, I use Nimue cleanser to wash my face. I have never ever come across a cleansing gel even vaguely as wonderful as this one. It foams, and it cleans your face well. What I also love about Nimue is that their products don’t smell super nice, like fields of daisies or chocolate or spice. When I use products that need to job a job that is not to make me smell nice [that's what perfume is for] I want minimal smelliness as I feel this isn’t always good for one’s skin, and often an amazing smell comes at the price of an effective product. Nimue is good for your skin. It doesn’t make you smell like a food group.

I use eye cream [again] and then a hydrating moisturiser.

Once again, my skin is hydrated without being oily, and it feels soft and smooth.

Other times:

Some of my other favourite Nimue products go beyond daily facial routine.

This is a MIRACLE product. I think a lot of people use exfoliators too often, and too harshly, and the results are not good. But when you use a chemical [as opposed to physical] exfoliator, you get all of the benefits of exfoliating without the risk of damaging your skin. I use this once every two weeks or so, and it works wonders.

On days that I know I will be in the sun a bit I use Nimue’s Sun C SPF body spray. Obviously if I will be completely exposed, and for a lengthy period of time, I use an SPF 50 [and reapply obsessively every few minutes], but for smaller doses of sun exposure this product is perfect and, once again, not sticky or oily.

Your lips haven’t lived until you try Nimue lip balm. Oh em gee.

Recently Nimue sent me a little gift to help me get glowing wedding skin. I had never tried their body oil, but one test and I love it. You spray it onto your skin before bathing and it leaves your skin silky smooth without oiliness. Super fab, and I will most certainly be using this on my wedding day.

Leading up to my wedding I’m doing masks [and using the exfoliating enzyme] more often than usual, and going for Nimue facials as frequently as I can. I feel confident that my skin will be wedding ready by September, and love me for the extra TLC.

Nimue also has various masks, intense treatments for specific skin problems, body treatements [including hand and foot treatments], a men’s range, a youth range [try some of the Youth tea tree oil moisturiser on spots and pimples- it does wonders], and pretty much every single thing your skin will ever need.

So, if you’re thinking of changing your product, or wondering what’s best, give Nimue a try. I’m pretty sure you won’t be sorry.

Date Night at Rick’s Cafe Americain

26 Jun

Last night, I wanted to take SC out for dinner to thank him for being so super amazing.

We took a while to decide where to go, and eventually headed to the V&A Waterfront, specifically to have mussels at a place which [allegedly] does amazing mussels. There is a “red tide” happening at the moment, so no mussels for us. I felt bad, but since I had gone there specifically for the mussels, I simply couldn’t stay [although I shall be back!]. Stupid red tide.

The second place, which was nearby, was the newly opened Cape Town branch of a Parkhurst restaurant I love. We sat down, and only a few minutes after looking at the menu [and after ordering water] did it emerge that this place did not have a liquor license. They mentioned that we could go buy a bottle of wine next door, and followed this suggestion with the fact that the bottle store had already closed for the day. People, it’s DINNER. There are candles, and couples, and it’s freezing outside. Assume customers are not teetotalers, and might want to warm up with a glass of red. Or just think logically, and mention this to them as they walk in.

So we left, because we really wanted a glass of wine.

Eventually we ended up at Rick’s Cafe Americain, in Park Street. I had heard good things, and people weren’t lying.

The decor is great and, of course, a nod to Casablanca. Of course. There is a smoking section, if that floats your boat, and all sorts of different sections separated by glass and staircases which create an interesting flow throughout the place. Situated in an old Victorian-style house, the walls are covered in Casablanca posters, tagines stand on display, and best of all, there are fireplaces!

They also make pretty good Gluhwein, which was exactly what I needed/wanted.

The menu has everything from mezze platters and cheese boards to burgers and pasta. There is seafood, comfort food like bratwurst and mash, and meat lovers’ dishes like rib-eye steak and pork fillet. And then are the more interesting dishes such as lamb tagine [complete with almonds, apricots, and cous cous] and even springbok tagine!

SC had the lamb tagine, which was delicious! I rarely have order envy, but wowee did I want to steal all his food. I had beef fillet with roast veg and fries and the most delicious jus I have ever tasted! Initially I ordered kingklip, and I wasn’t entirely happy with it. But the thing is, food isn’t always perfect at restaurants. It happens. It’s how they deal with complaints that matters, in my opinion. Sure, if you have to send every meal back it’s a problem, but it’s worse when sending food back turns into an awkward situation. Some managers/chefs/waiters get stroppy when you complain. But the waitress and manager were very polite, assured me they were hugely apologetic and I could order something else, checked up on me repeatedly, and so forth. I wasn’t made to feel awkward, and our waitress was friendly, warm, and enthusiastic.

Overall the food was good, the prices were reasonable, and the vibe was great. We loved sitting by the fireplace, and our waitress made the experience quite lovely. And personally, I would go back. For more gluhwein, and some tagine!

Weekend in Jo’burg in Pictures

26 Jun

Last week Thursday I flew up to Jo’burg for a work-related event, and decided to stay for the full weekend to catch up with family and friends, and deliver some of our wedding invitations to our Jo’burg guests.

Thursday night: Wine with the GBF, @simongerber, at Piza e Vino at The Zone. Much needed after a loooong day. PS. How much do we LOVE his Gryffindor scarf? I would totes be in Gryffindor or Slytherin. You?

Followed by sushi and more wine [and some bubbly] at Future Sister-in-Law’s place for an “invitation party”.

Everyone pitched in with tying, folding, assembling, cutting, closing, stamping, painting, and everything else!

Friday: More invitation making

And in between work and madness, delivering the finished product. And after yet another incredibly long day, drinks with friends! @XandervdMerwe, plus his chickita.

Saturday: coffee in bed and doggies as hot water bottles. A facial at the salon after visiting family.

A braai with The Gays. I was the only female, and only straight person. 11 gay men. 1 straight woman. Only person without Lady Gaga tickets [guess who].

Then went to a gay club. The lesbians were mean to me. There were shirtless men dancing on the stage. The gays were wonderful. Body shots happened. Of course.

Sunday: After too little sleep and the GBF once missing the train and then almost missing it a second time- tea with the girls. @Mpum_mpum [bridesmaid] and @_Dame_. Both fabulous school friends.

Overate. Poached eggs with mushrooms, tomato, and a huge ciabatta. Most amazing croissant ever. Macarons. Coffees.

And finally, after more invitation deliveries, family catch-ups, and madness, a flight back home. Delayed by an hour and a half, to land after 11pm. But still. Back in Cape Town with my love.

Wedding Stationery: The Invitations

20 Jun

I just got a message from our designer that she has picked up our invitations! [She had them printed where she lives since I would have absolutely no idea how to answer questions about ink and grain and all that.] Now, I obviously haven’t seen them myself [only the electronic version of the final design], or felt the paper, or any of that. I will only see them tomorrow, when I fly to Jo’burg.

For our invitations, we were thinking of going with a kind of travel theme… Not that that is in our decor, but the wedding is something of a cross-country affair. We had 3 engagement parties in 3 different provinces, our bridal party and guests are coming from all over the world, we live in Cape Town but are getting married in KwaZulu Natal, and we are traveling abroad for our honeymoon.

Love the old school mail border.

Maps. So rad.

Air mail. And the world!

Love typography, much like we did for our engagement party invites.

Fonts and travel and oh my!

Small details.

Twine. Especially since we have invites, maps, and registry cards to keep together!

So many beautiful ideas! [Thank you, Pinterest].

For now, I am holding thumbs that the invitations will be absolutely beautiful. Will report back tomorrow!

New Discovery: Sgt Pepper’s on Long Street

20 Jun

I while back SC and I went to Sgt Pepper’s Eatery for a cocktail. It was a Saturday afternoon, they allowed our dog [well, the one we were dog-sitting for the day] to join us, and the vibe was laid-back- exactly what we needed. The cocktails were delicious, and the music there is always great.

Since then I hadn’t been back, and I hadn’t eaten there.

But last night we decided to kick our “wedding diet” to the curb for one night, and enjoy the Sgt Pepper’s Tuesday special: two for one pizza.

That’s right: TWO FOR ONE!

We asked them to recommend two pizzas, and Dominic [he's great, ask for Dominic!] suggested something with chicken, camembert, rocket, and cranberry. The other one had ground beef with red onion and basil. And they were so, so damn good, that I could possibly give up being thin for a life of eating Sgt Pepper’s pizza every day, twice a day.

They’re on Long Street near Journey, and there’s also one in Stellenbosch.

Go there. Trust me.

Follow Sgt P’s on Twitter here, and like them on Facebook here.

Omnomnom Wedding Cake

19 Jun

I was never one of those girls who planned my wedding from the day I was conceived. But one thing I always thought would be quite nice is to have a tower of cupcakes instead of a wedding cake. I mean, not many people actually eat the wedding cake. And wedding cakes can sometimes be awfully over the top. And not too delicious.

However, SC did want a cake. Even if just a small, for us to cut. I am perfectly happy with that! So we decided on a tower of cupcakes, with a small [but not oddly tiny] cake at the top of the tower.

So we chatted to our cake maker, the very amazing Sue Edgcumbe. The initial thought was to have vanilla cupcakes with meringue icing. Delicious, not too sweet, and beautiful and glossy-looking. But since then our decor has headed in a slightly more soft, romantic, vintage direction, so the cupcakes had to mirror this.

It’s a bit tricky, planning a KZN wedding from Cape Town, but this weekend a friend of ours went to Durban, and she brought back our cupcake sample from Sue.

How utterly gorgeous are these?

Of course, we had to sample them…

And by “sample” I mean “eat all of”…

And the best part is, they taste as good as they look!

I don’t think I have ever been so in love with cupcakes.

As for the actual cakes, we’re still playing around with ideas. There are, quite simply, too many options out there!

I mean, do we go for a soft, understated cake?

A floral cake?

A quilted cake?

A lace cake?

A theme cake?

Decisions decisions!

Meantime, please enjoy some of the cakes we will NOT be having at our wedding.

And then treat your eyeballs to some baking heaven.

Bespoke Registry

18 Jun

I am so excited to write about this, I can hardly type! But trust me, you want to read this.

Bespoke Registry is, like, the best thing to ever happen to weddings in South Africa. Basically, the owner, Laura [who is stylish and pretty and very friendly] came to sunny South Africa from not-so-sunny London and found our wedding registries a little bit sucky. Brides were having to do several registries to cover all their bases. And even then, it’s not like you can to choose awesome designery things or luxurious egyptian cotton or one-of-a-kind furniture or anything special. A lot of it is pretty straightforward stuff that everyone has in their homes.

And so Laura started Bespoke registry. Firstly, you have a consultation with Laura and [at her very, very gorgeous home in Cape Town], during which you discuss what you want, need, and like, and the brands and products she has on offer. To give you an idea, here is a small selection:

Stores:

Stores

  • Pezula
  • L’Orangerie
  • Nap
  • House and Interiors
  • Block and Chisel
  • Exclusive Books
  • Trowbridge Gallery, UK
  • LaLa Linen
  • Miss Lyn
  • Le Creuset
  • Lim
  • O.live

Brands

  • Madwa
  • Laid Back Co
  • Fortis Hotelware
  • Bohemia Crystal
  • Weber
  • Riedel
  • Joseph and Joseph
  • Mason and Cash
  • Bodum
  • Soehnle
  • Global Knives
  • Chef’n Cheese
  • Charlotte Rhys
  • KichenAid
  • Dualit
  • Philippi
  • Mungo
  • Vinturi

So you have thousands of products to choose from. During your consultation Laura will draw up a list of everything you want on your registry. These are then uploaded to your own registry online at BespokeRegistry.co.za. At a later stage, you will also visit some of the stores listed above [with Laura] and choose some items from these stores. Oh, you know. Koi plates and hurricane lanterns and Bengali throws. We need these things in our homes! These are also added to your online registry.

The online registry is as simple as searching the couple’s names, and then clicking on their registry. Guests will then find a list of gifts, along with quantities, price, and what it is. More expensive items are listed as “contribute towards” gifts- people can chip in however much they want, and in the end several people would have bought you one expensive gift. Guests select an item [or several!], the quantity they want to buy, and proceed to check out. They have the option to add R6.50 onto the price to have gifts wrapped, like this:

A few weeks after your registry is closed, the gifts will be delivered [either wrapped or in Bespoke bags] to your door! In our case this will be during our honeymoon, so Laura will literally have a key to our place and drop the gifts off there so that when we get back we have an apartment full of presents! This is also perfect for us since we are getting married a good 1 500km from where we live, so getting the presents back home would be tricky.

Bespoke also gives you these beautiful cards to package with your invitations, explaining to people how your Bespoke registry works:

In fact, I love these so much that I had our invitations changed such that they are the exact same size as these.

Here are a few of my favourite things on our registry:

Pezula tripod lamp. Definitely a “contribute towards” item!

A Tiffany blue KitchenAid. *strokes computer screen lovingly*

Laguiole multi-coloured stationery. SC’s sister got us a mezze knife set from this brand as an engagement gift and it is just so gorgeous. And I love the mixed colours! It’s pricey, but possibly the thing I want most on this registry.

Some Le Creuset, in “Dune”. Casseroles, baking dishes, spatulas, cocottes, griddle pans… The list goes on, and it includes mugs in every colour. Of course. AND Le Creuset has kindly given a heart-shaped cocotte to each of Bespoke’s first 10 clients. Hoorah!

The sweetest little butter dish! [But ours has a bunny on it.]

Serve ware. We have several of these in different shapes and sizes, some on wood, some on slate.

We’ve added egyptian cotton bed linen, beautiful glassware, table linen, gorgeous handmade ceramics, wooden blocks and boxes, glass dome, vases, bar accessories, and everything else you could possibly think of. And getting stuff for free has never been more enjoyable, and convenient! In fact, I’m pretty sure I am going to use Bespoke to set up registries for every single one of my future birthdays. Also kitchen tea, baby showers, all of it! And my life will be a blissful existence of convenience and beautiful things and getting exactly what I want. How exciting is that thought?!

Check out Bespokeregistry.co.za and get in touch with Laura. Trust me.

You can check out our registry here. You know, to see how it all works. Or to buy us a present. If you feel like it…

The Weekend That Was

18 Jun

Sometimes, weekends don’t have to be epic and insane to be blog-worthy.

Sometimes they’re just wonderful in the simple things. Like, a beautiful sunset on a Friday evening.

Followed by a little bit of Jack Daniel’s honey whiskey…

Ambling along Long Street for vintage books and other finds.

Great food all weekend. From delicious coffee, to mezze platters at home, to ostrich burgers… Mmm mmm MMM!

Successful shopoing trips. Acquisitions: black pumps [I am saving money for shopping in Paris but my black flats are falling apart!]; perfume for wedding [my 100ml bottle of Angel is too big to lug around]; SC’s wedding ring, from Shimansky.

Church, cuddles, good movies, coffee, tea, writing, planning…

Ah, life is wonderful, even when it’s kind of plain!

Prague in 100 Days!

17 Jun

So, when the wedding planning gets really busy and things seem kind of overwhelming, it helps to take a step back and look at the amazing journey of marriage itself, rather than “having a wedding”. It helps to look at exciting things like moving in together and seeing friends from afar, or counting blessings like how awesome our families have been throughout all of this.

But it also helps to take some time out to lust over your honeymoon destination.

Our first destination [of 3]: Prague.

I look forward to crossing bridges that are from fairytales…

Walking the golden glow of fairytale streets at night with my love.

Visiting fairytale buildings.

Skipping down fairytale cobbled streets while holding hands and singing.

And generally live in a fairytale land of beauty, and beer. And Czech pastries!

I love the idea of exploring a city, and taking things as they come, rather than being part of a tour group for the duration of the trip. Also the idea of finding magical little spots that aren’t tourists nests. In Cape Town, for example, I love so many places [and go to them regularly] and none of them are typical touristy spots. Which is why this video is an absolute gem- the idea of this travel [web] TV is that the crew follows a local, who shows them around the city itself, not just its tourist attractions. Secret garden, great food, and pubs with good beer and friendly locals? Yes please!

Save The Date

17 Jun

Our invitations are going to be printed this week, and this made me realise I have not yet shared our save the date cards, which went out a few weeks ago!

So, here they are. Done, once again, by the talented Ashleigh Rodda.
